Lisa Dewey, 36, lives in Pattishall, Northamptonshire, England. For many years, she has enjoyed gel nail polish. This is a nail polish method that uses liquid gel to create a hard, flexible polymer layer on the nail, according to the New York Post (USA).
Lisa Dewey developed a severe allergic reaction after years of wearing nail polish.
This gel layer does not dry on its own but only hardens when exposed to ultraviolet or LED light. The advantage of gel nail polish is that the owner of this nail set can clean the house, wash dishes or do all daily tasks without fear of the nail polish peeling off.
However, Dewey's health problems began to arise in February 2023. Shortly after getting gel nails, she noticed her nails were swollen and the polish began to peel off.
When she went to the doctor, she was diagnosed with an infection and was prescribed steroid cream and antibiotics. Signs of the infection later disappeared.
In April 2023, she decided to get her nails done again. However, this time she did not get gel nails but acrylic nails. This type of nail treatment combines polymer powder and liquid monomer to create a hard layer that covers the nail.
But just days later, Dewey’s nail began to peel off, exposing the nail bed. The nail bed is the part that lies just below the nail when it falls out. Dewey described the condition as so painful that she could barely move her fingers and hand.
“I was afraid I was going to lose my finger,” Dewey said. Her fears grew when, shortly after, her finger began turning purple, leading her to suspect she was allergic to the nail product.
The pain has left her weak and struggling to do even the smallest tasks, such as holding a pen or washing her hair. She has to rely on her husband, Lee Dewey, 45, to help her with all the housework.
Because of her allergy, Dewey was no longer able to use nail products. She shared her allergy with the media to raise awareness about the risks of allergic reactions when getting nails done, according to the New York Post .
The British Association of Dermatologists says that allergic reactions to acrylic and gel nails are usually caused by contact with the chemical methacrylate found in the nail product. Signs of a methacrylate allergy include itching, a red rash, and some nails may become weak, loose, or even fall off.
