At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today (August 22), Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said this is the first visit of the Chilean Foreign Minister to Vietnam.

According to Ms. Hang, this visit is expected to promote the traditional and comprehensive friendship between the two countries, enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, agriculture, culture, tourism, education, science and technology, and climate change response.

In addition, the Chilean Foreign Minister's visit will strengthen cooperation between Vietnam and Chile in implementing free trade agreements between the two countries.

Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, as well as attend a number of other events.

Vietnam and Chile established diplomatic relations in March 1971. The two sides elevated bilateral relations to the level of Comprehensive Partnership in 2007.

The two countries have signed a bilateral free trade agreement, and are both members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
