VnExpressVnExpress30/06/2023

Four Vietnamese schools are in the top 1,000 of the world university rankings, the most ever.

On June 28, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) announced the 2024 world university rankings. Vietnam has 5 representatives in the rankings, all of which are familiar names: Duy Tan University, Ton Duc Thang University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi National University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

However, there are significant changes in rankings among schools. Duy Tan University is ranked 514th, up 286 places from last year. This is also the highest ranking of a Vietnamese university in the world university rankings ever.

Ton Duc Thang University also rose 280 places to the 721-730 group in the world. Meanwhile, two national universities are ranked 951-1,000, down 150 places compared to last year. Hanoi University of Science and Technology remains at 1,201-1,400, unchanged in its ranking.

Thus, Vietnam has 4 representatives in the top 1,000, up one compared to last year's QS ranking. According to another prestigious university ranking, THE, in 2023, Vietnam will have only two representatives in the top 1,000.

This year, QS ranked nearly 1,500 higher education institutions from more than 100 countries and territories, based on analysis of data from 17.5 million scientific articles and opinions of more than 240,000 lecturers and employers.

In addition to the five traditional criteria of academic reputation, school prestige, faculty/student ratio, citations, and internationality, QS adds three new criteria: sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research network.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remains at the top of the list for the 12th consecutive year with a score of 100/100. It is followed by the University of Cambridge with 99.2 points, the same as last year. The remaining universities in the top 10 are the University of Oxford, Harvard, Stanford, Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, College London and the University of California, Berkeley.

Asia has 10 schools in the top 50, from China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore. In Southeast Asia, Malaysia leads with 28 ranked schools, Indonesia 26, Thailand 13.

QS is one of the three prestigious university ranking organizations in the world, along with Times Higher Education (THE) and Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
