The document, signed by Celso Amorim, special adviser to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, said the countries believe that negotiations are the only viable solution to the "Ukrainian crisis".

The two countries support an international peace conference “to be held at an appropriate time recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation of all parties as well as a fair discussion of all peace plans,” the statement said.

"Both sides believe that dialogue and negotiations are the only viable solution to the Ukrainian crisis. All sides should create conditions for the resumption of direct dialogue and promote de-escalation until a comprehensive ceasefire is implemented," the statement said.

Dozens of other countries have signed up to a peace conference in June that host Switzerland is expected to pave the way for peace in Ukraine. Russia, however, has not been invited and has repeatedly rejected the conference.

Brazil and China also called on all parties involved to adhere to three principles to de-escalate the situation: no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting, and no provocative actions by any party.

Brazil and China said the use of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons or chemical and biological weapons, must be condemned, adding in the document that “every possible effort must be made to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons and avoid nuclear crises”.
