On April 19, the Foreign Ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued a statement calling on all parties to immediately end violence and exercise maximum restraint in Myanmar's border areas.

The statement expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of violence in Myanmar, particularly in Myawaddy township, Kayin state and in Rakhine state, which has left thousands of people homeless.

The statement stated that, to avoid further humanitarian consequences from the escalation of conflict in any form, ASEAN calls on all parties to immediately cease violence and exercise maximum restraint, uphold international humanitarian principles, take all necessary measures to ease tensions and ensure the protection and safety of all civilians.

The ASEAN Foreign Ministers also called on all parties to take urgent action to mitigate the impact of the conflict on civilians, including creating a safe and enabling environment to ensure the timely and safe delivery of humanitarian assistance.

The statement expressed support for the continued efforts of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre), as well as Thailand’s cross-border humanitarian initiative, in line with the Five-Point Consensus and in coordination with Laos, the ASEAN Chair in 2024, through its Special Envoy for Myanmar.

The Ministers also called for facilitating humanitarian assistance and promoting comprehensive national dialogue towards a lasting and comprehensive political solution in Myanmar.
