Google has announced a $1 million donation to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration fund, becoming the latest major tech company to try to build goodwill with the new US administration.
"Google is excited to support President-elect Donald Trump's 2025 inauguration, with a live stream on YouTube and a direct link on our homepage. We are also donating funds to the inaugural committee," Karan Bhatia, Google's head of global public policy and government relations, said yesterday (January 9).

Google began donating money earlier this week. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg both announced $1 million in donations to the inaugural fund late last year, while Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Apple CEO Tim Cook also contributed to Donald Trump’s inauguration.
After a candidate wins a presidential election in the United States, they appoint an inaugural committee to organize and fund inaugural events such as the inauguration ceremony, receptions, and parade.
Unlike direct contributions to a presidential candidate's campaign, there is no limit on the amount of money an individual, corporation or labor group can contribute to an inaugural committee.
Google has donated to past inaugurations, live-streaming the inauguration on YouTube with a link to the inauguration on its homepage.
Mr Trump has had a rocky relationship with big tech companies over the years and has not shied away from criticising the sector since the election. Late last year, he hinted that he would not rule out antitrust enforcement, a particularly sensitive area for Google.

A US federal judge ruled in August 2024 that the company had an illegal monopoly in search and text advertising. Arguments in a second antitrust case over Google's advertising business concluded in November 2024, although a verdict has yet to be announced.
“Big Tech has been running amok for years, stifling competition in our most innovative sector and, as we all know, using its market power to suppress the rights of so many Americans, as well as the rights of Little Tech!” Trump wrote in a December 4, 2024, post on Truth Social.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai and former Alphabet President Sergey Brin met with Trump after the November 2024 election, where Pichai publicly congratulated the president-elect on his “decisive victory” in a post on X.
Also on January 9, Microsoft announced that it would contribute $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration fund. The software maker is currently working closely with highly regarded partners in the technology industry.
Microsoft previously contributed $500,000 to Trump's inaugural fund during his first term and gave the same amount to President Joe Biden's fund.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has met with Trump multiple times, including in talks around a potential acquisition of TikTok in the US in 2020. Nadella also attended a Trump roundtable of tech executives from across the country in 2017.
