Need more young directors for TV series

Việt NamViệt Nam27/08/2024

Vietnamese television dramas are in the development stage, but the young directors and successor generation are not many, not commensurate with the development of the market.

After a period of saturation, Vietnamese television dramas have flourished and are still in the process of development with impressive works. In particular, television dramas that the Vietnam Television Film Center (VFC) has invested heavily in in terms of scripts, actors, filming locations, etc. are increasingly loved and welcomed by audiences.

Although they have not yet returned to their golden age, Southern television producers are still making efforts to meet the needs of audiences through works with typical old settings. In a joint effort, experts say one of the current concerns is the lack of young, skilled directors who can break through with impressive works, especially in the Southern market.

At VFC, young directors have the opportunity to practice, perform and have works that are loved by the audience, gradually being recognized today such as Nguyen Duc Hieu and Le Do Ngoc Linh with: "11 thang 5 ngay", "Gia dinh minh vui bat thuc luc", "Loi nho vao doi"...; Pham Gia Phuong and Tran Trong Khoi with "Biet duoc den"...

About 4-5 years ago, the young directors who were remembered by VFC at that time were: Mai Hien, Bui Tien Huy, Nguyen Khai Anh, Bui Quoc Viet. Currently, they all have many works that are strong enough to conquer the audience. Unfortunately, Southern television dramas lack young directors, and only have veteran names or names that have a solid reputation in the profession such as Meritorious Artist Ho Ngoc Xum, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Phuong Dien, Truong Dung, Nguyen Quang Minh...

Therefore, in general, Vietnamese television dramas still need many new directors to create vitality for the market. Some explanations given by people in the industry are that currently cinema is developing strongly in the Southern market and many young people want to try their hand in this field rather than choosing television dramas. They invest time, effort and opportunities to shine on the big screen and if possible, develop in this field rather than choosing television dramas which have many limitations, especially in terms of investment budget.

Meanwhile, VFC has a wider environment for developing television dramas and can search for, nurture, and train young directors. Therefore, if we want to create a young workforce and improve the situation, private producers, production centers from southern television stations in particular, and the whole country in general, need to increase opportunities for young people to attract and create conditions for them to practice their profession.
