The Kenyan officers arrived in Haiti in June as part of a US-funded multinational security assistance (MSS) mission. There are currently about 400 Kenyan police officers on duty there, but they have not received the additional allowances they are supposed to receive for the mission. The MSS has acknowledged the delay and promised to pay them this week.

Kenyan police officers are expecting to receive extra allowances for their tough assignment in Haiti, where they are not allowed to leave their base during working hours unless they have work to do. Some officers have expressed concern that they urgently need money to support their families in Kenya, especially now that schools back home have reopened.

The MSS is expected to grow to 2,500 men, with troops from several other countries joining in. Their mission is to assist the Haitian National Police in tackling gangs that control much of the capital Port-au-Prince.

The situation is currently being closely monitored and relevant parties are trying to resolve the issue of delayed salary payments.
