Tasers are one of the weapons equipped for Australian police.
New South Wales police representative Peter Cotter said that Claire Nolan was hit by a stun gun from a police officer with 12 years of experience, according to AFP on May 19.
The incident happened on May 17, when two police officers arrived at the Yallambee Lodge nursing home in Cooma, New South Wales, after receiving a report that Ms. Nolan had taken a knife from the kitchen.
Mrs. Nolan has dementia, is 1.57m tall, weighs 43kg, and is loved by everyone at the nursing home.
Mr Cotter said the two officers negotiated with the woman for several minutes and used a stun gun on her as she approached them.
"At the time she was tased, she was walking towards the police. However, she was walking very slowly. She was using a walker but she was holding a knife," Mr Cotter said. As a result, she fell backwards and hit her head on the ground.
"We are extremely concerned about what happened that day. And that is why we have opened an investigation," said a police representative.
The old lady was seriously injured after hitting her head on the ground and is currently in a state of lucidity and unconsciousness.
It took Australian police a day to confirm the use of a stun gun on an elderly person. Police have yet to release video of the "confrontation" at the nursing home.
In 2008, Ms Nolan made headlines in Australia after she skydived to celebrate her 80th birthday.
