A male student named VQC (15 years old) went to the Eye Hospital because of an unusual lump on the upper eyelid of his left eye. According to his family, about a week before he was admitted to the hospital, an object was shot into his eyelid, causing bleeding but not much pain, only slight pain when pressed.

A few days later, when the skin wound had healed but the tumor remained unchanged, the family decided to take C. to the hospital for examination.

Through examination, doctors noted that the patient had dull pain and mild swelling in the eyelid area, but no signs of severe inflammation or unusual discharge.

Doctor Nguyen Thi Thuy Tien, Head of the General Ophthalmology Department, said that upon examination, the patient was found to have a hard tumor measuring 10x10mm in the upper eyelid of the left eye, suspected to have a foreign object inside.

The patient was scheduled for emergency surgery. The results of the surgery surprised the entire family, as a 6mm iron ball was lodged just under the skin of the left eyelid, just a few millimeters from the patient's eyeball.

"If the shooting force is stronger, this bullet can directly impact the eyeball, causing bleeding in the eye, retinal detachment (an important nerve layer of the eye) or eyeball rupture, leading to serious vision loss," said Dr. Thuy Tien.

Currently, the male student's health is stable, his vision is preserved and he can resume normal activities immediately after surgery.

Through this case, doctors warn parents and students not to be subjective with any injury to the eye area, even if it is a slight impact or small wound.

Doctors warn that there are many types of iron ball guns on the market that pose a potential danger (Photo: BV).

Because in many cases, metal foreign objects such as nails, glass fragments, bullets, etc. can penetrate the skin, lie deep in the tissue without causing obvious pain, and are easily overlooked. If detected late, the risk of eye damage is very high.

"Currently, many types of iron ball guns are widely sold on the market with diverse designs. Children can easily access them, potentially causing serious injuries, especially in the eye area," the doctor analyzed.
