According to Xinhua News Agency, 16 people died in a mine fire that broke out on September 24 at the Sanjueshu coal mine in Panzhou town, Guizhou province, China.

Preliminary investigation results show that the fire occurred when a conveyor belt caught fire. The fire has been extinguished and the temperature at the scene has returned to normal.

While safety standards in China's mining sector have improved in recent decades, accidents are still common in the industry, often due to lax enforcement of safety regulations, especially at the most rudimentary sites.

In February, a mine collapse in Inner Mongolia autonomous region killed 53 people.

Statistics last year showed that 245 people died in 168 mining accidents.
