Japan's largest warship docks at Cam Ranh port

The helicopter destroyer JS Izumo of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has docked at Cam Ranh port, beginning a visit to Vietnam until June 23.

NHK reported that the helicopter destroyer JS Izumo and destroyer JS Samidare of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) docked at Cam Ranh port, Khanh Hoa province on the morning of June 20.

At the welcoming ceremony, Japanese Rear Admiral Nishiyama Takahiro said that the JMSDF hopes to increase regular exchanges with the Vietnamese Navy and strengthen cooperative relations so that the two sides can coordinate when necessary. According to Mr. Takahiro, the East Sea is also an important sea area for Japan.

The two warships will stay in Vietnam until June 23. During this time, the Japanese crew will meet and exchange with Vietnamese naval officials.

This is the first time JS Izumo has visited Vietnam in four years, as part of efforts deployed by JMSDF since 2017 to promote a free and open Indo- Pacific region.

JS Izumo is one of Japan's two largest warships today. The ship is 248 meters long, has a full load displacement of 27,000 tons and can carry 14 helicopters. The last time JS Izumo docked at Cam Ranh port was June 2019.

JS Izumo docked at Cam Ranh Bay in May 2017 to participate in Pacific Partnership 2017, a multilateral mission to prepare for the largest humanitarian assistance and disaster response operation ever conducted in the Indo- Pacific .
