Government explains why it won't extend high-speed railway to Can Tho
According to the Railway Network Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway is a conventional railway, currently being prepared for investment, expected to be invested before 2030.

The Government has just sent report No. 815/BC-CP to the National Assembly to explain the opinions of National Assembly deputies on the investment policy of the North-South high-speed railway project.
In the 143-page A4 report, the Government fully explained the opinions of National Assembly deputies discussing in Groups and in the Hall on the investment policy of the North-South high-speed railway project, including the proposal to consider extending the scope of the project to Can Tho and to propose amending and supplementing the length of the route of about 2,110 km from Lang Son to Ca Mau cape.
Regarding this content, the Government said that with the goal of developing a synchronous and modern infrastructure, gradually realizing the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, the Railway Network Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, has planned to develop new railway lines on the North - South corridor from Lang Son to Can Tho, with a length of about 1,871 km, including 3 routes: Lang Son - Hanoi, Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City and Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho.
The railway lines from Lang Son to Can Tho have different transportation needs, so the technical standards and types of railways are also different. The Lang Son - Hanoi route is a conventional railway with a design speed of 160-200 km/h and is currently planning in detail to mobilize investment capital. The Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route is a high-speed railway. The Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho route is a conventional railway with a design speed of 160-200 km/h and is currently preparing for investment, expected to be invested before 2030.
Therefore, the Government proposes to maintain the scope of the North-South high-speed railway project from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City as in the draft Resolution.
Specifically, the North-South high-speed railway project will have a total length of about 1,541 km; starting point at Ngoc Hoi station (Hanoi capital), ending point at Thu Thiem station (Ho Chi Minh City), passing through 20 provinces and centrally-run cities including: Hanoi capital, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City.
According to preliminary research results, investment in the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway is essential to meet the increasing transportation demand in the future, while ensuring harmonious and sustainable development of transport, urban restructuring and population and labor distribution on the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho corridor, promoting the competitiveness of the economy.
The route of the Ho Chi Minh City – Can Tho railway starts from Binh Duong (An Binh station) to Can Tho (Can Tho station), passing through 6 provinces/cities with a total length of 174.42 km. On the route, there are 15 stations, 11 stations for maintenance, repair, vehicle inspection, preparation, etc.
The railway technology selected for the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway line is the distributed power train (EMU) for passenger trains, the centralized power train for freight trains, automatic train control signals on the radio information platform; the maximum design speed is 190 km/h (passenger trains operate at this speed).
