Trump administration tightens policy on transgender people

Công LuậnCông Luận15/02/2025

(CLO) On February 14, the US Army announced that it will no longer allow transgender people to enlist and will end gender transition-related medical services for soldiers.

The decision comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 27 requiring the Pentagon to establish a policy for transgender military personnel within 30 days.

Mr Trump's executive order states that expressing a "gender identity that does not conform to biological sex" conflicts with military standards.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has halted recruitment of people with gender identity disorder and halted all gender-affirming medical services, a decision that is facing legal challenges in court.

The Trump administration also removed the term “transgender” from the website of the Stonewall National Memorial, a historic site for the LGBTQ+ movement, a move that many activists have criticized as an attempt to erase the role of transgender people in the movement’s history.

Activist Raquel Willis stressed that "the Stonewall riots happened because of the struggles of transgender people, especially people of color."

Along with that, Mr. Trump also signed an executive order requiring government agencies to only use the term "sex" instead of "gender identity", affirming that gender is "an unchangeable biological reality".

These policies mark a major shift in US military policy and LGBTQ+ rights. The removal of transgender representation from official US documents is creating a wave of controversy domestically and internationally.
