Dog survives 30 hours buried in China earthquake

VnExpressVnExpress25/12/2023

A dog trapped under rubble for nearly two days in -16C weather has been successfully rescued, after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake devastated Qinghai province.

Chinese state media on December 24 posted a video of rescuers in Danhe County, Qinghai Province successfully rescuing a golden retriever from under the rubble caused by an earthquake.

In the video, the golden retriever is seen trapped when a house collapsed during the 6.2-magnitude earthquake on December 18. Rescuers found it nearly two days later, with all four legs stuck in thick mud in -16C weather.

Because the dog could not stand up on its own, the rescue team had to dig deep into the mud to pull it out. When rescued, the animal appeared exhausted and could not stand. The rescue team took it to the Kim Dien evacuation center and reunited it with its owner.

"The earthquake happened very quickly, the ground sank, causing me and my dog to be separated. My dog is three and a half years old. When the rescue team found him, his whole body was buried in mud, only his head sticking out. I thought I would never see him again," the owner said last weekend.

"Now it's eating and running around again," the person said. "I sincerely thank the rescue team. After finding my dog, I feel like life has hope again."

The earthquake struck at midnight on December 18 in Jishishan, an area in Gansu Province bordering Qinghai Province, killing at least 148 people and injuring hundreds. The Chinese government has quickly built dozens of evacuation points with more than 7,500 houses to serve as temporary housing for people while search and rescue operations continue.
