The moves to comply with the new rules come as Beijing tightens oversight of domestic mobile apps last month, making it harder to publish apps in the world’s second-largest economy and potentially subjecting many to removal.

New regulations require mobile app publishers to submit detailed business information to the government . App marketplaces in China must set up a filing system to monitor new apps by the end of August 2023.

Rich Bishop, CEO of app publisher AppInChina, said domestic Android app marketplaces have confirmed that new apps will need to submit information starting August 31. Global apps on the marketplaces must set up a local legal entity or work with a local partner.

Reuters commented that this shows that although authorities appear to end a years-long crackdown on the technology sector, Beijing still aims to maintain business activities associated with socialist ideals.

Last week, Android app stores from Tencent, Huawei Technologies, Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo issued notices to app publishers banning new apps without proper documentation from being introduced on their platforms.
