Every year, about 6 million tons of used coffee grounds (pictured) are discarded, most of which end up in landfills.

Prevent brain degeneration with… coffee grounds

Researchers at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) have made the first steps in creating caffeic-acid carbon quantum dots (CACQDs) from soil (made from coffee grounds), which have the ability to protect brain cells, laying the foundation for treating non-genetic neurodegenerative diseases.

“Caffeic acid-based carbon quantum dots have the potential to treat neurodegenerative disorders. Our goal is to find a cure by addressing the atomic and molecular foundations that drive these capabilities,” said Jyotish Kumar, lead author of the study.

The researchers found that CACQDs scavenged free radicals or prevented them from causing damage, while also inhibiting the aggregation of amyloid proteins. Importantly, CACQDs did not cause side effects that affected cells.
