National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man meets with President of the Swiss Senate

According to VNA special correspondent, on the morning of July 29 local time, in Geneva, within the framework of attending the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament and conducting bilateral activities in Switzerland, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with President of the Swiss Senate Andrea Caroni.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to developing friendly relations with Switzerland. The delegation's attendance at this conference in Switzerland and bilateral meeting with the Swiss parliament's leaders is the first high-level activity to implement the Vietnam-Switzerland Comprehensive Partnership since its establishment in January 2025 during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to Switzerland.

The National Assembly Chairman expressed his satisfaction with the positive developments in bilateral relations, especially the regular exchange of high-level delegations between the two countries, creating new momentum for bilateral cooperation, especially in the context that the two countries will celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026; and informed the Swiss side about Vietnam's recent socio-economic development achievements.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man thanked Switzerland for its valuable support and assistance to the past struggle for national reunification and Vietnam's current socio-economic development, with the total ODA capital for Vietnam to date reaching nearly 800 million USD and recently pledging to support 50 million USD for the Vietnam Development Cooperation Program for the period 2025 - 2028. The National Assembly Chairman highly appreciated the role of the Swiss Parliament in supporting the organization of this World Conference of Speakers of Parliament; suggested that the two countries strengthen cooperation through the National Assembly, specifically increasing delegation exchanges at the level of specialized committees, friendship parliamentarians' groups, women parliamentarians' groups, and young parliamentarians to exchange information and experience in the field of legislative activities, supervision and decision-making on important issues of the country; hoped that the Swiss Parliament would share its experience in building and perfecting the legal system as well as enhancing the role of the National Assembly in national development.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man expressed Vietnam's desire to cooperate with Switzerland in the fields of financial technology, digital banking, etc.; thanked the Swiss authorities at all levels for always supporting the community of more than 10,000 Vietnamese people in Switzerland to deeply integrate into the host country, thereby actively contributing to the socio-economic development of Switzerland and the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.

President of the Swiss Senate Andrea Caroni affirmed that Switzerland always attaches importance to strengthening the Vietnam-Switzerland Comprehensive Partnership; highly appreciates Vietnam’s socio-economic development achievements in recent times; and expresses his desire and commitment to promoting cooperation with Vietnam, especially through the National Assembly channel.

President of the Swiss Senate Andrea Caroni said that the Switzerland-Vietnam friendship is vividly demonstrated through thousands of citizens of Vietnamese origin living and working in Switzerland, making a very positive contribution to the relationship between the two countries; affirmed the necessity of cooperation and sharing of experiences in building and perfecting the legal system to create a development institution in line with current global trends. Announcing that the two sides plan to restart negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in September 2025, the National Assembly Chairman hoped that Switzerland and Vietnam would soon discuss the bilateral Free Trade Agreement.

Discussing regional and international issues of mutual concern, the two sides affirmed their support for resolving disputes and conflicts by peaceful means on the basis of respect for international law and the United Nations Charter, contributing to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development in each region and the world; agreed to continue to strengthen consultation, coordinate positions and support each other at international forums including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Francophone Parliamentary Union (APF) and other regional mechanisms.

On this occasion, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man respectfully invited President of the Swiss Senate Andrea Caroni to pay an official visit to Vietnam at a suitable time.
