In 1986, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien failed the university entrance exam with a score of 2 in physics. The painful fall of Major General Hoang Dan's son was shared many times by him, most recently on June 27 on his personal TikTok channel, as a message of encouragement to the 2025 high school graduation exam candidates.
Mr. Hoang Nam Tien studied in class 10I and 11I, specializing in mathematics at Chu Van An High School, class of 1983-1985. In early 1985, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted was established.
The specialized math classes of Chu Van An, the specialized physics classes of Viet Duc, the specialized foreign languages classes of Ly Thuong Kiet... were gathered at Ams school, establishing the first talented class of Hanoi.

Mr. Hoang Nam Tien became the 12th grade math class monitor at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted.
In the same class with him that year were Ms. Le Mai Lan - Principal of VinUni University and Ms. Duong Tu Anh - current Vice Principal of Ams School.
At the age of 18, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien failed the university entrance exam, something that until now, he still does not understand why. He confided in his father that he wanted to change direction to become a pilot, but General Hoang Dan only said: "You can become a pilot if you want, but you have to pass the university entrance exam. Where you fall, there you stand up."
The following year, Mr. Hoang Nam Tien retook the exam and passed with a very high score to enter Hanoi University of Science and Technology. However, once again, the young man was devastated because his exam score was only 0.5 points away from his study abroad score.
Most of his classmates in the math class at that time had gone to the West, and he was among the few students who had to study at a domestic university. Failure made him depressed, he did not want to go to school, and continuously skipped classes. It was not until his fourth year that he regained his spirit to focus on his studies and graduated with a degree in information technology engineering.
Vice President of the Board of Directors of FPT University contemplated: "In fact, it is very difficult for us to learn anything from success. But from failure, we can learn a lot of things."

According to him, he invested a lot in his child's education, inviting the best teachers to tutor his child. His daughter is also an excellent student.
However, the academic pressure of the specialized school left his daughter with no time for personal interests, as he described: “Since coming to Amsterdam, my daughter has had almost no summer, studying every day, morning, afternoon, evening, not even on Saturdays or Sundays, the number of extra classes is extremely high…”
The Vice President of the Board of Directors of FPT University affirmed that leaving the specialized school that day helped his daughter have a good life like now.
He also gave advice to parents: “Don’t force your children to do things you can’t do. Your children are your friends. Let them live their dreams.”
