Delta Air Lines Flight 133 departed from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan, on Tuesday. However, nearly two hours into the flight, the Airbus A330-300 had to return to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport after maggots reportedly fell onto passengers from the overhead bins in the carry-on luggage compartment, according to Detroit television station Fox2.

Delta Airlines flight turned around because of strange creature

Philip Schotte, a Dutchman who now lives in Iowa, said he saw about a dozen maggots on a woman sitting next to him.

"She was panicking and trying to fight off the maggots… I really don't know what was going on in my head. I was trying to process it - the disgust was obvious. We had to wait there for real help," Schotte shared.

Schotte said the crew eventually found the maggots in a passenger’s bag, among the fish wrapped in newspaper. The bag was moved to the back and the passenger was told the plane would return to Amsterdam.

Schotte then took another flight to the United States.

Data from flight tracking website FlightAware shows Delta Air Lines Flight 133 was in the air for just 1 hour and 49 minutes.

Delta Air Lines confirmed to CNN that the flight had to turn around but did not provide a specific answer about the maggots.

"We apologize to the passengers of Flight 133 AMS-DTW for the disruption to their travel due to improperly packed carry-on baggage," Delta Airlines said in a statement to CNN. "The aircraft returned to the gate and passengers were placed on the next available flight. The aircraft has been taken out of service for cleaning."
