Studies show that levels of the stress hormone cortisol — which also helps with alertness — are highest when we first wake up.

In the morning, cortisol levels naturally spike to "wake up" the body and prepare for the day.

Cleveland Clinic (USA) also said that normally cortisol levels increase in the morning, right before waking up.

The study, published in the scientific journal International Review of Neurobiology, added that cortisol levels increase starting when waking up in the morning and peak about 30 to 45 minutes after waking, then gradually decrease.

Along with this, coffee also has the effect of increasing cortisol levels, and drinking coffee early in the morning will increase cortisol levels even more.

"So wait until your cortisol levels start to drop, usually mid-morning, before having your morning cup of coffee," advises Dr. Kukadia.

The amount of cortisol that is already high in the early morning, and "added" by drinking coffee at this time, will create a stress response in the body.

Amanda Maucere, a sports nutritionist in Florida (USA), previously advised that it is best to wait a while after waking up before drinking morning coffee.

Ms. Amanda Maucere said that although cortisol helps "wake up" the body, high levels of cortisol will be harmful to the body. When the amount of cortisol that is already high in the early morning is "replenished" by drinking coffee at this time, it will create a stress response in the body, according to the Daily Mail.

Studies show that cortisol levels peak in the morning, decline throughout the day, and drop sharply around 9:30 a.m.

Other experts also recommend drinking coffee between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to get the best energy benefits and avoid jitters.
