(Dan Tri) - Although they are disabled, Thanh and Be have tried to overcome adversity to build a happy home. With the mother-of-pearl inlay profession, they have had a good life to look forward to.
Piece of happiness
"When they knew we were together, our families supported us but were still worried because we were both disabled... We were determined to be together with empathy and sincere love," Ms. Be confided.
Ms. Pham Thi Be (born in 1985, from Thach That district, Hanoi ) has a congenital disability in her legs, making it difficult for her to walk. Since she was a child, Ms. Be asked to learn mother-of-pearl inlay, hoping to be self-reliant and not become a burden to her family.

Feeling sorry for Be, a carpentry workshop owner took her in. From then on, she followed the skilled workers, traveling around the provinces and cities with the profession of carpentry and mother-of-pearl inlay.
In 2010, while working with a group of workers to make mother-of-pearl inlay products in Quang Binh , Ms. Be met and fell in love with Mr. Nguyen Mau Thanh (born in 1980) - a person in the same situation. Together, the two wrote a fairy tale love story.
Mr. Thanh was born into a large family in Duc Ninh Dong ward, Dong Hoi city (Quang Binh). His childhood was full of hardships, he contracted polio at the age of 5, which left his body exhausted and his legs gradually atrophied.
Despite his disability and difficult family circumstances, Thanh was very eager to learn. In 2002, with great effort, he passed the entrance exam to Da Nang University of Technology. However, due to his circumstances, Thanh had to give up his dream and work for a carpentry workshop in Dong Hoi city.
After a period of apprenticeship, seeing Thanh's diligence and willingness to study and work, the owner of the carpentry workshop taught him the mother-of-pearl inlay craft. This is also where he met his wife Pham Thi Be.

"Maybe because we are in the same situation, it's easier for us to talk. I really love and admire her because she has difficulties but knows how to love and share with everyone. Our feelings gradually grew, we loved each other more and more, then we decided to live together," Thanh shared.
After nearly 15 years together, facing many difficulties, Thanh and his wife have overcome them and built a home together.
In Be's eyes, Thanh is the most perfect man that life has given her. Their family is even more complete when they have two lovely children, a boy and a girl.
Overcoming adversity
Although life is still full of difficulties and hardships, Mr. Thanh and his wife always work together to develop the family economy as well as raise their children.
In 2019, Mr. Thanh was supported by the Dong Hoi City Disabled Youth Club to attend training courses to improve his skills, connect with organizations, and support his family with 12 million VND to buy machinery to do his own work.

After opening a mother-of-pearl inlay workshop at home, Thanh’s family’s finances gradually improved. The products he and his wife made were impressive, unique, and had their own cultural and distinctive features, so they were favored by many customers.
Mr. Thanh is currently working with about 20 carpentry workshops in Dong Hoi city to make mother-of-pearl inlay works. Thanks to that, he and his wife have regular jobs, earning about 20 million VND per month after deducting expenses. From their savings, Mr. Thanh's family has built a spacious house.
In the small yard, Thanh and his wife diligently work on mother-of-pearl inlay every day. According to Thanh, this job requires the worker to be skillful, creative, meticulous, and careful in every detail.
The work is divided between Thanh and his wife in stages. After receiving the order, Thanh will come up with ideas, draw samples on paper, evaluate and select the most suitable and satisfactory samples to implement. Meanwhile, Be will carve the wood, attach mother-of-pearl to the wood, grind and inlay, and use black powder to highlight the motifs...
"Having learned the craft of mother-of-pearl inlay, my wife and I have stable jobs and are no longer a burden to our family and society. I plan to borrow money to buy machinery and materials, expand the market to create more jobs and income, and meet the needs of customers who love the art of inlay," Thanh confided.
Mr. Nguyen Viet Quan, Head of the Disabled Youth Club of Dong Hoi city, said that Mr. Thanh and Ms. Be are typical examples of perseverance in overcoming difficulties in the locality.
Over the years, the Club has always cared, encouraged, supported loans, and helped members build 40 livelihood models and find suitable jobs. Since then, many members have strived to become self-sufficient economically, reducing the burden on their families and society.
