Aquatic weeds threaten Northeastern US ecosystems

The northeastern United States is facing a growing environmental challenge as the notorious aquatic weed, known as northern hydrilla, expands its range.

Northern hydrilla originated from hydrilla verticillata in Asia and has since spread throughout North America and Europe, thriving in lakes, rivers, and canals. In the United States, the weed was initially limited to several Connecticut rivers by late 2022, but by late 2023, the invasive weed had been detected in six additional locations in Massachusetts.

Northern Hydralilla grows rapidly and can form dense mats that impede activities such as boating and fishing. Researchers say the current spread represents a significant ecological invasion event with potentially far-reaching impacts.

According to The Weed Science Society of America, the uncontrolled spread of this weed poses a significant threat because it carries a bacterium that produces a neurotoxin, which can cause ecological impacts on native aquatic and non-aquatic plants and animals...
