Leech crawled into man's urethra

Recently, Thong Nhat General Hospital received a male patient PVĐ (75 years old, living in Dong Nai province) who had a leech about 6cm long crawl into his urethra (a part of the urinary system, a long tube connecting the bladder to the urethra to carry urine out. In men, it also plays a role in carrying semen out) while working in the field. This is a rather rare case.

As soon as the patient discovered a leech had entered the urethra, he promptly used his hand to squeeze the urethra to prevent the leech from entering deeper inside.

After examination, the doctor determined that the leech was still stuck in the patient's anterior urethra and had not yet entered the bladder. The patient was instructed to loosen the pressure and encouraged to urinate. After only about 15 minutes, the leech crawled out on its own.

Doctors recommend that people who regularly work in contact with rivers, fields or stagnant water areas should be vigilant because leeches can easily enter the urethra. If you detect or have signs of suspected leeches entering the body, you should quickly go to a medical facility for timely treatment to avoid dangerous complications.
