Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra will succeed Mr. Srettha Thavisin, who was dismissed by the constitutional court on August 14.

The 37-year-old, known by her nickname Ung Ing, is Thaksin Shinawatra's youngest child and the third member of her family after her father and aunt to hold the country's top job.

The ruling coalition selected Ms Paetongtarn as a replacement candidate at a meeting on the night of August 15, after none of the other 10 parties in the coalition put forward an alternative.

Pheu Thai and its partners hold 314 seats in parliament, and Ms Paetongtarn needs the approval of more than half of the current 493 lawmakers to become prime minister .

Ms Paetongtarn ran the hotel division of her family’s business empire before entering politics three years ago. She has been a near-constant presence on the campaign trail in the 2023 election as one of Pheu Thai’s candidates for prime minister. She gave birth just two weeks before polling day.

According to Reuters, the female Prime Minister will immediately face challenges on many fronts, as the economy is slowing down, competition from rival parties is increasing and support for Pheu Thai is decreasing as it has not yet implemented a cash support program worth 500 billion baht (14.25 billion USD).
