Kai Rooney made a splash at the MU academy. |
Despite being on summer vacation, Kai was called up to an international tournament, facing opponents three years older than him. Wayne Rooney's son travelled with the Manchester United U19 team to take part in the Mladen Ramljak Tournament in Croatia, which brings together some of Europe's top football academies.
On Instagram, Kai excitedly shared photos from his residence in Croatia, along with the message: "Upcoming U19 tournament".
The MU U19 team was placed in Group A with Juventus, Rapid Bucuresti and Dinamo Zagreb. The team's first match will be against Romania's Rapid Bucuresti on August 7. In addition to Kai, the MU U19 team also decided to call up a few faces from the U15 and U16 teams to try out.
Rooney's son has impressed in recent times as he helped United's U16s reach the final of the NI Super Cup (aka Milk Cup). Capable of playing both as a centre-forward and a winger, Kai put in a fine performance, scoring and assisting in his debut match.
Kai was the star of the MU U16 team thanks to his mature and sharp playing style in goal. However, MU U16 could not win the championship when they lost 0-1 to Southampton U16 in the final.
In addition to Kai, another young talent of MU, JJ Gabriel, was also called up to the U19 team despite being only 14 years old. JJ Gabriel was dubbed "Carrington's Messi" when he made a strong impression on the U18 team last season and became the youngest player to play for this team.
JJ Gabriel turns 15 in October, making him eligible to play in the Premier League.
