New carbon storage technology

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, USA have just found a new method to store carbon dioxide (CO2) captured from the atmosphere much faster than current methods without using toxic chemicals.

In the new study, the team developed a technique to form carbon dioxide hydrates that is six times faster than previous methods. These unique ice-like materials could bury CO2 in the ocean, preventing it from being released into the atmosphere. Hydrate formation also offers the potential for desalination, gas separation, and gas storage, providing a versatile solution for a variety of industries. CO2 is the most common greenhouse gas and a major cause of climate change.

CO2 capture and sequestration takes the gas out of the atmosphere and stores it permanently. Today, the most common method of storing CO2 is by injecting it into underground reservoirs. This technique has the dual benefit of capturing CO2 and increasing oil production, but it faces serious problems, such as the risk of CO2 migration causing leaks and groundwater contamination. Many parts of the world also lack suitable geological features for creating CO2 reservoirs.
