Mr. Mai Quoc Long, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pha Lai Thermal Power Joint Stock Company, spoke at the Technical Exchange Workshop to evaluate scenarios for bringing coal-fired thermal power in Vietnam to a net greenhouse gas emission level of "0" by 2050 (photo provided by Pha Lai Thermal Power Joint Stock Company).

Accordingly, JETP proposed to convert Pha Lai 1 Thermal Power Plant to use 100% suitable fuel, zero CO2 emissions for 4 units. If the technology is economically feasible, Pha Lai 2 Thermal Power Plant will switch to using 100% suitable fuel, zero CO2 emissions by gradually shifting from co-firing to enhanced absorption. Being in the priority investment group will help Pha Lai Thermal Power Joint Stock Company better achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, net emissions of "0" by 2050.

According to the leader of Pha Lai Thermal Power Joint Stock Company, fuel conversion is facing difficulties such as the ammonia co-firing technology is not yet complete, no power plant in Vietnam has tested ammonia co-firing and evaluated the efficiency and impacts on people, the environment, equipment... On the other hand, the ability to supply new fuels domestically is currently limited and the price of clean fuel is higher than the price of coal...

Therefore, to achieve this goal, the unit really needs the support of the International Partnership Group and technical stakeholders so that coal-fired thermal power plants can access the necessary resources to effectively implement the low-carbon development roadmap, which is resilient to climate change in the common effort of global energy transition...

The JETP Declaration was signed by Vietnam and members of the International Partnership Group at COP28. The program will support Vietnam to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, transitioning from fossil fuels to clean energy...
