But UEFA confirmed that Crystal Palace and Lyon share ownership. Billionaire John Textor - owner of Eagle Football Group - holds shares in both Lyon and Crystal Palace.
According to UEFA regulations, two clubs with the same owner cannot participate in the same tournament. In the event that two clubs with the same owner qualify for a UEFA tournament, the team with the higher ranking in the national championship will be given priority.
According to this regulation, Lyon will be given priority to participate in the Europa League because they finished 6th in Ligue I, while Crystal Palace ranked 12th in the Premier League.
Since the end of last season, billionaire John Textor has been looking to sell his stake in Crystal Palace to help the team qualify for the Europa League.
Last month, Textor announced it had sold its stake in Crystal Palace to Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets football team, for £190m.
But the transfer of shares has not been approved by the Premier League. That has caused Crystal Palace to not complete the restructuring of the team on time (before April 30, at the latest May 17) and was eliminated from the Europa League by UEFA.
The team's board of directors called UEFA's decision "absurd" and "the most unfair in football history".
Crystal Palace can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). If they fail to overturn the decision, they will be relegated to the Conference League. Meanwhile, Nottingham, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season, is likely to replace Crystal Palace in the Europa League.
