The Last Meeting

Báo Sài Gòn Giải phóngBáo Sài Gòn Giải phóng18/09/2024

“I deeply love, respect and miss Major General Phan Khac Hy - the last general of the Truong Son Army Command,” Colonel Dinh Cong Ty choked up. On the afternoon of September 17, Major General Phan Khac Hy returned to the legendary Truong Son, to his beloved comrades and teammates...

Previously, on September 16, Colonel Dinh Cong Ty went to Thong Nhat Hospital (Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City) to visit Major General Phan Khac Hy as usual. As soon as he saw him, Major General Phan Khac Hy said to his daughter: "Uncle Dinh Cong Ty is here to visit."

Colonel Dinh Cong Ty did not expect that it would be the last meeting with Major General Phan Khac Hy - his superior during the years of fighting in the "fire line" of Truong Son.

At 90 years old, having experienced so much pain when witnessing his comrades sacrificed in many battles, Colonel Dinh Cong Ty burst into tears: "I am so sorry, Mr. Phan Khac Hy just received the 80-year Party membership badge a few months ago. He was a great support for his children and grandchildren, for his comrades in the Ho Chi Minh Trail Truong Son Tradition Liaison Committee in Ho Chi Minh City".

Recalling the time when he started his mission on the Truong Son route, Colonel Dinh Cong Ty shared that in 1954, after participating in the historic battle of Hill A1 of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, he returned to learn driving and did educational work at Driving School 255.

In 1965, driving school 255 was assigned the special task of selecting highly qualified officers and soldiers to receive 100 new vehicles carrying food and weapons to the southern battlefield. He was the Political Commissar of Company 5 of the convoy.

The convoy was tasked with delivering vehicles and goods to Group 559 - Truong Son Army, starting the time he and his teammates took on the mission on this route.

During the time Colonel Dinh Cong Ty was the Political Commissar of the 11th Armored Regiment, under the 32nd Military Station, Major General Phan Khac Hy followed the route very closely.

"As a deputy general on the fiery Truong Son front, we often met Major General Phan Khac Hy regardless of the weather, day or night, always coming to check the situation," Colonel Dinh Cong Ty recalled - the image of a brave, knowledgeable general who always lived with loyalty to his comrades and subordinates came flooding back to him.

According to Colonel Dinh Cong Ty, in peacetime, Major General Phan Khac Hy always felt the pain of loss and the promises he made to his comrades during the war years.

"He was humorous, often laughed and talked, but had many thoughts about Truong Son. He often returned to visit his fallen comrades, had many programs for the relatives of martyrs, and especially wished to educate his children and grandchildren about revolutionary traditions," said Colonel Dinh Cong Ty.

Contacting a few teammates to attend the funeral of Major General Phan Khac Hy, Colonel Dinh Cong Ty had tears in his eyes.

Now, the legendary generals and his comrades have returned to the motherland one by one. He hopes that the younger generation will continue to inherit and promote the revolutionary tradition; show gratitude and follow the example of their ancestors.

"When I returned from the hospital, I made an appointment to visit Mr. Phan Khac Hy on the next occasion. The appointment was not fulfilled, but he passed away in the sorrow, respect and infinite gratitude of those who remained," Colonel Dinh Cong Ty was moved.

The funeral of Major General Phan Khac Hy was held at the Southern National Funeral Home, No. 5 Pham Ngu Lao (Ward 3, Go Vap District, HCMC).

Visitation from 7am September 20.

Memorial service from 5am September 21. Burial at Ho Chi Minh City Cemetery.
