Mr. Phan Viet Cuong, former Secretary of Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee, was dismissed from the position of member of the 13th Party Central Committee by the Central Committee, according to his personal wishes.
The announcement on the afternoon of January 31 from the Party Central Committee Office said that at the extraordinary conference held the same morning, the Central Committee assessed Mr. Phan Viet Cuong as a high-ranking official of the Party and State, who had received basic training and had grown from the grassroots. He was trusted by the Party Central Committee and the Politburo to hold a number of leadership positions in the locality.
As Secretary of the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee for the 2015-2020 and 2020-2025 terms, Mr. Cuong made many efforts in leadership and direction. However, he bears the political responsibility of a leader when many party organizations and party members at lower levels violated the law, causing serious consequences, and were disciplined, in some cases criminally prosecuted.
"Realizing his responsibility to the Party and the people, Mr. Phan Viet Cuong has submitted a request to resign from his assigned positions, retire from work and retire," said a statement from the Party Central Office.
At the end of December 2023, Mr. Cuong submitted a resignation letter from January 1, 2024, 6 months earlier than the retirement age, for health reasons.

Mr. Phan Viet Cuong, 61 years old, from Dai Dong commune, Dai Loc district, Quang Nam; has a master's degree in economics . In September 2015, he was elected Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and since the beginning of 2019 has been Secretary of the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee.
In mid-November, the Central Inspection Commission concluded that the People's Committee of Quang Nam province and many organizations and individuals violated regulations on Covid-19 prevention and control and receiving citizens returning home during the pandemic; managed and used land for a number of investment projects and implemented projects/bid packages of the International Progress Joint Stock Company (AIC); many officials and party members were criminally prosecuted.
The above violations "caused serious consequences, damage and risk of major damage to State money and property". A series of officials and former officials of Quang Nam province have been disciplined.
