According to the National Economics University, the general goal of the project is to make English a tool used regularly in learning, teaching, research and working at this university.

Specific target, aiming for 100% of training programs to have at least 30 modules taught in English from 2028.

In particular, from 2030, students graduating from the National Economics University must achieve a minimum English level of B2 or equivalent to IELTS 6.0. The school currently requires a minimum IELTS 5.5, with programs in Vietnamese.

National Economics University will expand the English-speaking environment in all academic and administrative activities. From 2025 and throughout the project implementation process, the English-speaking environment will be gradually built and expanded not only in teaching but also in academic activities, research, communication, and administrative operations.

Up to now, National Economics University is the first university to issue a project to develop English as the second language in university.

According to the National Economics University, since 2012 the school has proactively built and applied a system of output standards for full-time university students, considering this one of the key criteria to improve training quality and ensure integration ability after graduation.

From 2012-2017, the school applied English output standards equivalent to B1 level (IELTS 4.5); from 2018, it was adjusted to B2 (equivalent to IELTS 5.5) for the standard program, IELTS 6.0 for the high-quality program, and IELTS 6.5 for the advanced and internationally linked program.

In 2017, the National Economics University first recruited students based on a combination of international language certificates and IELTS from 6.5 and only received about 50 applications, then the number increased sharply over the years.

Most recently, in the 2025 university admission season, Dr. Le Anh Duc - Head of Training Management Department, National Economics University - said that the number of candidates with IELTS certificates and other foreign language certificates applying to the school was about 22,000 candidates (an increase of nearly 50% compared to last year).

For the group of candidates with international competency assessment certificates such as SAT, ACT is about 3,000 (an increase of 80% compared to last year).

Before 2024, about 75% of students admitted to the National Economics University had met the English output standards right from the start.

However, the school believes that there are still significant challenges when a number of students, especially in majors taught in Vietnamese, have not met the standards on schedule, requiring increased support and adjustments to teaching methods during the training process.
