The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024 continues to record familiar leading positions, with Oxford University (UK) in the top position for the ninth consecutive year, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (USA) in second place and Harvard University (USA) in third place.

Princeton University (USA) and Cambridge University (UK) ranked 4th and 5th respectively. Stanford University (USA) fell to 6th place on THE's rankings.

THE's 2025 rankings include more than 2,000 universities from 115 countries and territories, based on nearly 20 performance indicators in the areas of teaching, research environment, research quality, industrial knowledge transfer and international outlook.

China is moving closer to a top 10 spot as its Tsinghua University continues to boost its global research influence, ranking 12th overall, according to THE.

This year’s rankings saw all five of Australia’s top universities fall in the rankings due to declining international reputations and prospects. In addition, three countries entered the top 200 for the first time: Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

On the Vietnamese side, this year's ranking recorded 9 universities entering THE's global university rankings in 2025, with 3 schools appearing for the first time (not ranked in 2024) namely Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics , Hanoi Medical University and Ho Chi Minh City Open University.

The specific positions of the 9 Vietnamese universities are respectively Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (ranked 501 - 600), Duy Tan University (601 - 800), Ton Duc Thang University (601 - 800), Hanoi Medical University (801 - 1,000), Ho Chi Minh City Open University (1,201 - 1,500), Hanoi National University (1,201 - 1,500), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (1,500), Hue University (1,500) and Ho Chi Minh City National University (1,500).

The Times Higher Education (THE) University Rankings is one of the world's most prestigious university rankings, evaluating universities based on many factors to provide a comprehensive view of the quality and reputation of higher education institutions globally.

The ranking covers research-intensive universities, assessing performance across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, knowledge transfer, international outlook, and more.

THE rankings are published annually, with the participation of thousands of universities from around the world.

In 2024, the THE rankings evaluated 1,907 universities from 108 countries and territories.

In 2025, this ranking will have more than 2,000 universities from 115 countries and territories participating.
