Canadian Ambassador: Vietnam has given me many things

On June 23, Canadian Ambassador Shawn Steil came to say goodbye to Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen on the occasion of the end of his term.

Sharing about his three-year tenure, Mr. Shawn Steil said he felt honored to witness Vietnam's rise, its resilience, strength, and response to global events. "What Vietnam has achieved is remarkable," he said.

The Canadian Ambassador reviewed the milestones in bilateral relations over the past years, such as the 5th anniversary of the Comprehensive Partnership in 2022, Canada's adoption of the Indo- Pacific strategy in the same year, and the largest Canadian delegation ever to Vietnam in 2024...

"We have laid the foundation for a growing relationship. Canada has faith in developing relations with Vietnam and we are a reliable partner," he emphasized.

Secretary Nguyen Van Nen congratulated Ambassador Shawn Steil on his excellent performance, leaving many impressions, and thanked him for his efforts to promote bilateral relations. His term witnessed many stages of Vietnam, from the post-COVID-19 pandemic to the current strong transformation.

The Canadian ambassador said he received more than what he left in Vietnam. "I have a lot of unfinished business in Vietnam but I believe that when I leave, the bilateral relationship will continue to grow," he said.

He also joked that his term began with the COVID-19 crisis and ended with another crisis - the current world conflicts.

Canada is also facing challenges from tariffs with the US and is looking to diversify its trade. He stressed that in that context, Vietnam and Canada need to continue to cooperate further.

Secretary Nguyen Van Nen said that Vietnam always aims to be friends with all countries, on the basis of mutual respect and respect for the law. In the current situation, the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee shared that in danger there is always opportunity and emphasized the need to maintain national identity and solidarity to overcome challenges.

The City Party Secretary believes that Vietnam and Canada still have a lot of room to take advantage of this opportunity, in which Ho Chi Minh City has many opportunities for Canada.

The city also hopes to learn from Canada in areas where it has strengths, such as digital transformation and governance. In response, Shawn Steil said Canada wants to increase trade and support projects between Vietnam and the city.

At the end of his term, the Canadian ambassador said he would continue to contribute to bilateral relations wherever he is. "And I will return to Vietnam, even if I am no longer an ambassador," he said.
