General Phan Van Giang met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense of Laos

General Phan Van Giang, Minister of National Defense of Vietnam, had a meeting with General Chansamone Chanyalath, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense of Laos.


On November 19, in Vientiane (Laos), General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, Minister of National Defense of Vietnam, had a meeting with General Chansamone Chanyalath, Politburo member of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defense of Laos. The event took place on the sidelines of the 18th ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) and the 11th ADMM+, clearly demonstrating the spirit of solidarity and close cooperation between the two countries.

At the meeting, General Phan Van Giang expressed his gratitude for the presence of the Lao high-ranking delegation at the ceremony to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Traditional Day of Vietnamese Volunteer Soldiers and Experts in Laos last October in Hanoi. In response, General Chansamone Chanyalath warmly welcomed the participation of the Vietnamese delegation at ADMM-18 and ADMM+, affirming that this is a testament to Vietnam's strong support for Laos' role as ASEAN Chair in 2024, and at the same time an important contribution to the overall success of the conference.

The two sides shared information about the situation in each country and emphasized the effectiveness of the second Vietnam-Laos border defense exchange activities. These activities have created positive effects, received support from senior leaders, ministries, sectors and localities of the two countries, contributing to further tightening the special friendship between Vietnam and Laos.

Within the framework of defense cooperation, the two Ministers agreed to closely implement the Defense Cooperation Protocol for the 2025-2029 period and the Cooperation Plan for 2025. Some key areas mentioned include: strengthening Party and political work; promoting and educating the history and significance of the Vietnam-Laos relationship; maintaining existing cooperation mechanisms such as high-level delegation exchanges and the Defense Policy Dialogue at the Deputy Minister level. In addition, the two countries will continue to coordinate in areas such as responding to non-traditional security challenges, border protection, human resource training and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese martyrs.

On this occasion, General Phan Van Giang respectfully invited General Chansamone Chanyalath and leaders of the Lao Ministry of National Defense to attend upcoming major events in Vietnam, including the 80th Anniversary of the Vietnam People's Army, the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024 and related activities. Vietnam also welcomes Lao defense enterprises to exhibit at the exhibition, opening up opportunities for cooperation and connection in the defense industry.
