A flight in India was delayed for more than an hour after a swarm of bees swarmed the plane's doors. Images of the swarm have gone viral on social media.

The unbelievable incident took place on Monday morning on an Indigo flight scheduled to fly from Surat to Jaipur at 4:20 am, India Today reported.

Baggage handlers were reportedly loading luggage onto the plane when they were suddenly attacked by a swarm of bees. Wild footage shows the swarm swarming on the open cargo door, resembling a scene from the 1992 horror film "Candyman."

Bee swarm causes flight delay

As a result, the plane was ordered to stay on the ground until the swarm was dealt with. Initially, airport officials tried to scare off the bees with smoke—a traditional technique used by honey collectors in India and elsewhere—but without success.

They then called in the fire department and sprayed water on the swarm. However, this only attracted more bees, causing panic among airport staff.

After repeatedly spraying both smoke and water at the invading bees, the crew was finally able to drive the swarm away without causing any damage to the aircraft.

The plane was finally able to take off back to Jaipur at 5:26 a.m. - more than an hour after the swarm was driven away.

"IndiGo flight 6E-784 Surat-Jaipur was delayed due to a bee incident which was beyond our control, hence the flight departed after getting permission," an airline spokesperson said.

This is not the first time a flight has been attacked by bees. Last year, passengers at an airport in Brazil were stranded on the runway for more than an hour after a swarm of bees covered the wing of a plane.
