Warning signs that your body is dangerously dehydrated

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/11/2024

Overhydration occurs when the body drinks too much water or due to a health condition that causes water retention. The result is an imbalance of electrolytes, essential minerals that help regulate heart rate, blood circulation...

The US National Academy of Medicine recommends that an adult should drink 2 to 3 liters of water per day. Depending on the ambient temperature, age, gender, physical activity level and some other factors, you need to drink more or less water than this amount, according to the health website Verywell Health (US).

Experts recommend that an adult should drink 2-3 liters of water/day.

Although drinking water is necessary, drinking too much can cause overhydration or even water intoxication. In addition to the amount of water, the speed at which you drink it is also an important factor in causing overhydration. Overhydration can lead to symptoms such as confusion, fatigue, headaches, and muscle cramps.

One of the early warning signs of overhydration is the color of your urine. Light yellow urine is a sign that your body is drinking enough water, while dark urine is a sign of dehydration. However, if your urine is clear white and accompanied by frequent urination, it is a sign of overhydration. Normally, a healthy person will urinate 6-10 times a day.

If excess water causes adverse health symptoms, the person should limit the amount of water they drink during the day, take diuretics, urinate frequently, and seek medical intervention if necessary. Severe excess water will lead to water intoxication.

Water intoxication dilutes the electrolytes in the blood, especially sodium. This condition causes brain swelling, which causes the nervous system to malfunction and affects brain function. Symptoms of water intoxication include blurred vision, diarrhea, fatigue, high fever, headache, increased salivation, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and seizures. Sufferers need to go to the hospital for treatment.

To prevent overhydration, people need to understand their body's water needs. In general, drinking 2 to 3 liters of water per day is safe. People who exercise regularly also need to replenish water regularly before, during and after exercise, according to Verywell Health .
