The new study was conducted by experts at Taiwan's Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. The research team analyzed data collected from about 5,000 people with colorectal cancer, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).
Abdominal pain is one of the common symptoms of colorectal cancer.
The results showed that younger patients with colorectal cancer were at higher risk of rectal bleeding and changes in bowel habits. Specifically, the study found that before being diagnosed, about 60% of people with colorectal cancer under the age of 50 had rectal bleeding. Meanwhile, this rate in people over 50 was only about 30%.
Another warning sign is that nearly 60% of adolescents with colorectal cancer experience changes in bowel habits, compared to only 48% of older patients.
Additionally, younger patients are more likely to be diagnosed at later stages. This is because younger people tend to ignore warning signs. Rectal bleeding and abdominal pain are also more common in this group.
Colorectal cancer is cancer that develops in the colon of the large intestine or rectum, the section of the intestine that connects the colon to the anus. Cancerous tumors develop from polyps or growths in the inner lining of the colon and rectum. Screening tests can detect polyps when they are still in the precancerous stage and intervene promptly. If left undetected or untreated, cancer can spread to other parts of the body.
Common symptoms of colorectal cancer are blood in the stool, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bloating, unexplained weight loss, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, shortness of breath, and several other symptoms.
To prevent the risk of colorectal cancer, people need to eat more plants, exercise regularly, avoid drinking alcohol, not smoke, and have regular health check-ups, according to Medical News Today .
