On the occasion of the 78th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day, July 27, Vietnam Women's Publishing House has launched the book "Dang Thuy Tram and the third diary", with an unpublished part of the diary of martyr, doctor Dang Thuy Tram and stories surrounding the martyr before leaving Hanoi for the Southern battlefield.

The book was compiled by author Dang Kim Tram, who is the younger sister of martyr Dang Thuy Tram. Author Dang Kim Tram wrote the book based on the diary of doctor Dang Thuy Tram written before leaving to serve on the battlefield in the South. The book helps readers better understand the portrait of Dang Thuy Tram with youth, knowledge and full of life ideals.

According to Ms. Dang Kim Tram, the book "Dang Thuy Tram's Diary" was first published in 2005, based on two volumes of the diary of doctor and martyr Dang Thuy Tram that were lost during a sweep and were captured by the American army, then returned to her family. Therefore, the family called it the first and second volumes, published in a condensed version of "Dang Thuy Tram's Diary".

The book published this time is called the third diary, but in fact it is the first one, written by Dr. Dang Thuy Tram in the last 2 years, before going to the South. This diary, sent by Dang Thuy Tram to her mother, Mrs. Doan Ngoc Tram, she kept it for decades, until now the family decided to publish and call it "The Third Diary".

Dang Thuy Tram was born in 1942 and grew up in an intellectual family in Hanoi. At the end of 1966, young doctor Dang Thuy Tram volunteered to work in the B battlefield. After 3 months of marching from North to South, in March 1967, she arrived in Quang Ngai and was assigned to be in charge of a clinic in Duc Pho, mainly treating wounded soldiers. On June 22, 1970, during a business trip from the Ba To mountains to the plains, doctor Dang Thuy Tram was ambushed by the enemy and sacrificed at the age of 28, 2 years in the Party and 3 years in the profession.

The book is 384 pages thick, consisting of 2 parts: "Ideal People" and "The Bridge Over the River of Division", along with an introduction to some letters with family and friends of Dr. Dang Thuy Tram; memoirs of Mrs. Doan Ngoc Tram - Dr. Dang Thuy Tram's mother; articles by author Dang Kim Tram and the female doctor's siblings.

The book helps readers visualize a very different perspective on the dream of curing patients, the reason for being human, and the mission of citizens when the country is divided. From then on, along with many young people from the North, not afraid of sacrifice and hardship, Dang Thuy Tram determined to go to the battlefield in the South.

Readers cannot help but be moved when they are shown each small but typical story of a generation living in the North from 1954 to 1964. The hardships, the joys and sorrows, the peaceful scenes before the day peace was broken…

There are touching details such as the scene where the older sister Thuy Tram feeds her younger sister radish and says “this is the best dish” but her younger sister only finds it spicy. It is like a slow-motion film, realistic and full of emotions for readers to see the scene of catching fish and snails to earn extra money for a simple meal, the scene of an intellectual family having to peel peanuts, spin yarn, embroider scarves… in their spare time to earn extra income.

In this book, the love story of Doctor Dang Thuy Tram and soldier M. is told through many different perspectives, very real and very "real". It is a pure, beautiful love story of young people in wartime, always knowing how to put responsibility for the Fatherland and homeland above all else.

In a poem, Dang Thuy Tram wrote “And who knows who / Love has given us wings”. Through the diary pages, we can see the image of a Dang Thuy Tram full of femininity, with youthful energy, with a heart filled with love for her country, family, relatives, friends and love between couples.

She wrote: “I want to live more solidly, not drown in pain and longing, and so I folded this small notebook. Taking notes… how can I not write down the thoughts of a heart! Well, let’s just study hard, be content to live in the love of our parents, in the affection of our friends. Be happy for the joy of the collective, of the group. I’m just smiling, they’re playing around me, so mischievous, yet so cute…”

Author Dang Kim Tram shared: “I think the most precious thing about my sister is love. There are many people who are braver and more arduous than my sister. But what she brings to everyone is her heart full of love for everyone.”

Closing the book “Dang Thuy Tram – The Third Diary”, what remains in the reader’s mind is hope and love. These two important things have always been deep in the heart of the young girl Dang Thuy Tram from her childhood to the days of living in the middle of the battlefield.

There is a saying by Dr. Dang Thuy Tram that still inspires many people today: "Life must go through storms, but must not bow down before the storms." The more I read the diary entries, the more I appreciate this peaceful life, love this life more and believe in love, whether life is peaceful and happy or at the end of pain.
