According to Reuters, law professor Wang Jiangyu from the City University of Hong Kong - who has a large following on Weibo - asked the artificial intelligence (AI) application DeepSeek how China should respond to US President Donald Trump's imposition of a 10% tariff on goods from this country.
Accordingly, DeepSeek proposed response options such as imposing new taxes on industries in Michigan and Wisconsin in the US, and offering new tax incentives for domestic industries.
The AI also suggests China could set technical standards for electric vehicle charging that would create an insurmountable barrier for US companies.
Professor Wang said DeepSeek's thinking is "comprehensive, practical and relevant".
So far, Chinese policymakers have not taken up any of DeepSeek's proposals.
Meanwhile, Chen Zhihao, a prominent stock commentator, asked DeepSeek for investment advice on Chinese stocks when the market reopens this week, amid Mr. Trump's tariffs.
DeepSeek predicts Beijing could ramp up stimulus measures “to guard against external pressure,” or introduce new measures to support the tech industry.
China's DeepSeek created a "shock" in the technology world when it was launched during the recent Lunar New Year holiday.
The app also dethroned ChatGPT to become the most downloaded app on the App Store last week.
In a December report, startup DeepSeek claimed to have trained its DeepSeek-V3 model for under $5 million, using an Nvidia H800 chip.
Some experts have questioned the accuracy of this claim. However, DeepSeek's breakthrough has raised doubts about the effectiveness of the billions of dollars that US tech giants have pledged to invest in AI development.
Authorities in Japan, South Korea, France, Italy and Ireland, among others, are looking into DeepSeek's use of personal data.
