The cases have expanded the H5N1 outbreak in U.S. dairy herds to 14 states. Since March, more than 190 herds have been infected, along with 13 workers on dairy and poultry farms, according to federal data.

The virus's jump from birds to cows has raised concerns that it could adapt and spread to humans. Federal officials say bird flu poses a low risk to the general public and that pasteurization inactivates the virus in milk.
No human cases have been confirmed in California, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The infected herds, located in the state’s Central Valley, began showing symptoms on August 25, according to a statement.
The infected farms were quarantined. Sick cows were isolated and treated on the farm, while healthy cows were allowed to continue transporting milk for pasteurization.
Earlier, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said it was conducting testing to confirm cases in California. The USDA also said it was working closely with the California Department of Food and Agriculture to control the spread of the virus.
