On May 30, Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Deputy Director of Road Management Area IV, Vietnam Road Administration ( Ministry of Transport ) said that the unit is continuing to coordinate with Vinh Long Provincial Police to clarify the cause of the incident where a Ponton barge carrying rocks crashed into Mang Thit Bridge (Vinh Long Province), causing damage.

The collision damaged the girder of Mang Thit bridge.

"Currently, Road Management Area IV is taking the lead in planning and handling the problem and submitting it to the competent authority for approval. After that, a construction unit will be selected to carry it out. Therefore, it is still not possible to confirm how many days it will take to fix the problem," Mr. Nam added.

To ensure the repair, safety for vehicles in traffic, as well as re-evaluate the quality of the project after repair, Mr. Nam said that the load limit on Mang Thit bridge has been adjusted.

Specifically, the ban on vehicles with a total load of 2.5 tons or more and 16-seat passenger vans crossing the bridge will be adjusted to ban vehicles with a load of over 10 tons and passenger vans with over 30 seats crossing the bridge.

Authorities are working on a plan to handle and repair the damage caused by the incident.

When crossing a bridge, the minimum distance between two adjacent vehicles is 35m.

As reported by Giao Thong Newspaper, at around 5:00 p.m. on May 27, a tugboat carrying about 960 tons of rock, controlled by captain D.TD (48 years old, residing in Long An province), was traveling on Mang Thit River.

When arriving at Mang Thit bridge area, it was raining heavily at the same time, the stone carrying deck collided with the old Mang Thit bridge support pillar.

The impact caused the stone deck to be punctured, water flooded in, causing it to tilt and capsize, and continued to collide, damaging and deforming cross beams 19, 20, and 21 of the new Mang Thit bridge.

Fortunately, the incident did not cause any casualties.
