Djokovic falls out of top 10 in ATP Finals race

VnExpressVnExpress18/03/2024

An unsuccessful performance at Indian Wells has left Novak Djokovic out of the top 10 in the race for a ticket to Turin at the end of the year.

Djokovic has only earned 910 points in the first three months of the year, something that has rarely happened to him in previous seasons. At the same time last year, Djokovic led the rankings by winning the Adelaide International, the Australian Open and reaching the semi-finals of the Dubai Championships.

The Serbian has been empty-handed since the 2023 ATP Finals. He lost to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the Australian Open and was eliminated in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open by a far inferior opponent, Luca Nardi. Nole then announced that he would skip the Miami Open and would be out at least until the Monte Carlo Masters starts in early April.

Nole's year-to-date record is worse than that of players like Tommy Paul, Ugo Humbert and Sebastian Baez. He still holds the top spot in the ATP rankings with 9,675 points, but is only 920 points ahead of Carlos Alcaraz, who has to defend 2,270 points on clay and 1,200 points at Wimbledon.

Without good results in the summer, with the focus on two majors in Paris and London, Djokovic will have a hard time competing for a ticket to the ATP Finals, because he still has many points to defend in the North American hard court season at the end of the year, where he won the US Open and Cincinnati Masters last year.

The Race to Turin leader is Jannik Sinner with 2,900 points, 750 points ahead of second-placed Daniil Medvedev. Next are Alcaraz (1,500), Alexander Zverev (1,435), Alex de Minaur (1,395) and Andrey Rublev (1,050).
