(NLDO) – The England women's team showed their superior class when they crushed Wales 6-1 in the final round of Group D, thereby winning a ticket to the quarter-finals of Euro 2025 as second place in the group behind France.

Deploying the strongest lineup in the match that will decide the ticket to continue in Group D in the early morning of July 14, the England women's team did not hide their intention to win all 3 points to avoid the risk of stopping early at Euro 2025 like many other "big sisters".

The match started with controversy in the 13th minute when Georgia Stanway won a penalty after VAR determined she had been fouled in the box. Stanway herself converted the free kick, opening the score 1-0 for England.

Georgia Stanway (8) opened the scoring for England from the penalty spot.

Just five minutes later, Ella Toone doubled the lead with a close-range rebound. Before Wales' defence could settle, Lauren Hemp headed home from a beautiful Toone pass to make it 3-0. Before the first half ended, Alessia Russo scored her first goal of the tournament, putting England 4-0 up.

In the second half, coach Sarina Wiegman changed the personnel to save energy for the next round but the match was still completely tilted towards the "Three Lions". Beth Mead increased the score to 5-0 in the 72nd minute before young player Aggie Beever-Jones scored her first goal at Euro, sealing the 6-1 victory in the 89th minute.

Wales only managed to score a consolation goal in the 76th minute through Hannah Cain – their first ever goal at a Women’s Euro. Despite failing to make it past the group stage, Wales were still recognised for their fighting spirit and the efforts of veterans such as Jess Fishlock, who left the team after this match.

England enter quarter-finals, start title defence campaign

With a big win over Wales, England finished the group stage with 6 points, ranked second behind France (9 points) and qualified for the quarter-finals. Their next opponent is Sweden - the team that won Group C. Meanwhile, the Netherlands (3 points) was eliminated along with Wales (0 points).

This is England's second consecutive win after a shaky start and is a strong affirmation of the team under coach Wiegman. With their rising form and excellent attacking play, the "Three Lions" are expected to successfully defend their European title in Switzerland.

Eight teams in the quarterfinals revealed

Except for the "big sister" Netherlands who had to stop early, the top names of women's football in the Old Continent all got tickets to continue. They are Norway, Switzerland (Group A), Spain, Italy (Group B), Sweden, Germany (Group C) and France, England (Group D).
