The fact that the Vietnamese disabled sports delegation exceeded the gold medal target at the 12th ASEAN Para Games can be seen as a miracle created by the efforts of the athletes and coaching team.

Tonight (June 9), the 12th Southeast Asian Games (ASEAN Para Games 12) officially ended.

At the 11th ASEAN Para Games held in Indonesia last year, the Vietnamese disabled sports delegation ranked 3rd overall with 65 gold medals, below Thailand (117 gold medals) and host Indonesia (175 gold medals).

At this Congress, as of June 8, when the sports competitions were almost complete (only badminton remained), the Vietnamese delegation had won 66 gold medals, 56 silver medals, and 77 bronze medals.

The Vietnamese delegation is certain to rank 3rd in the overall ranking of this year's congress, below Indonesia (153 gold medals) and Thailand (123 gold medals), and far ahead of the 4th-placed delegation, Malaysia (46 gold medals).

This is a very positive result because before the congress, Deputy Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, head of the Vietnamese disabled sports delegation attending the 12th ASEAN Para Games, Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh, only set Vietnam's target of winning 50-55 gold medals to enter the top 4 on the medal tally.

Like last year, Vietnam exceeded the medal target and this is also the highest achievement of Vietnamese disabled sports at the ASEAN Para Games when not serving as the host country.

On the morning of June 8, Vietnamese swimmer Danh Hoa performed impressively in the 100m freestyle event for the S4 disability category. Not only did he win the gold medal, Danh Hoa also set an ASEAN Para Games record with a time of 1 minute 36 seconds 23.

Including this congress, Danh Hoa won 4 gold medals and set 3 records.

But the most impressive swimmer was Trinh Thi Bich Nhu in the S6 disability category. After breaking her own record (1 minute 25 seconds 11) with a time of 1 minute 23 seconds 77, Bich Nhu became the best swimmer of this congress with 5 gold medals and 3 records.

While the swimming team won 11 gold medals, the athletics team also brought home 7 gold medals, contributing greatly to the "golden list" of achievements of the Vietnamese disabled sports delegation.

Notably, the couple of athletes Cao Ngoc Hung (javelin throw, disability class F57) and Nguyen Thi Hai (women's discus throw, disability class 57) won gold medals on the same day.

Trinh Thi Bich Nhu is the epitome of this congress. Although she had to compete in many distances, with a determined spirit, Bich Nhu still performed excellently.

Sharing with reporters in Phnom Penh (Cambodia), she said that there was a time when she felt self-conscious and inferior, and to have today, the female athlete had to try her best, overcome herself with the will to constantly strive to improve.

The impressive achievement at the 12th ASEAN Para Games is the "sweet fruit" of Bich Nhu's extraordinary determination. This is also an encouragement for people with disabilities to always strive to improve their lives.

There were other equally special achievements at this congress. The two gold medals of Vo Van Tung (athletics, disability category F34) and Truong Bich Van (athletics, disability category F56) are a testament to this.

Both seemed to miss the ASEAN Para Games due to the organizers unexpectedly cutting some events. However, under pressure from the delegations, the organizers confirmed that the events would resume.

Van Tung and Bich Van left for Cambodia the night before the competition and then both won gold medals in the shot put events.

The Vietnamese disabled sports delegation had a successful and emotional ASEAN Para Games!
