Global smartphone sales recover after more than 2 years of decline

Global smartphone sales grew 5% in October compared to the same period in 2022, the first increase after 27 months of decline, according to market research firm Counterpoint Research.

The growth was mainly due to the recovery in emerging markets. It was also due to the new development of Huawei Company in China as well as the launch of Apple iPhone 15 in September, among other factors.

Huawei posted the fastest growth among smartphone makers in China in the third quarter after the launch of its Mate 60 Pro smartphone in September, which attracted a lot of consumer interest, according to CNBC. October also recorded the highest monthly smartphone sales since January 2022. Apple's launch of the iPhone 15 series in late September also helped boost smartphone sales.

According to data from Counterpoint Research, South Korea's Samsung continued to lead the global smartphone market in the third quarter, with a 20% share of total smartphone sales. Apple came in second with a 16% share, followed by Chinese brands Xiaomi (12%), Oppo (10%) and Vivo (8%). Counterpoint Research expects the global smartphone market to grow further in the fourth quarter of 2023.
