Unique old lottery tickets

"Building the country, I hope that in my heart I can help many people build their own homes/Beautify the country through many hardships, I vow to build it in a golden dream/When a millionaire comes, fifty dollars will buy a car, and the family will be rich for a long time...".

That is the first part of the song National Lottery , sung by "freak" Tran Van Trach (brother of professor Tran Van Khe, from Vinh Kim, My Tho) to open the lottery program that was broadcast live on Saigon Radio before 1975, from 4 p.m.

The time of national lottery

The old lottery (1951 - 1975) was born by Decree No. 651-Cab/PR dated December 21, 1951 establishing the "National Lottery". At first, the national lottery was drawn every 3 months, then from 1955 to 1975, it was drawn continuously once a week. In 1958, the lottery was drawn every Friday. From 1961, it was drawn on Tuesday. From March 1974 to April 26, 1975, it was drawn on Saturday.

Throughout the 1950s until the end of 1966, the lottery ticket still had a face value of 10 dong, signed by the Minister of Construction and Urban Design and the General Director of the Treasury, with prizes of 100 dong, 500 dong, 1,000 dong, 5,000 dong, 10,000 dong, 50,000 dong, 100,000 dong and a jackpot of 1 million dong.

In early 1959, the lottery ticket still had 2 signatures, but instead of the Minister of Urban Construction and Design, it was the Minister of the Presidential Palace. The face value was still 10 dong and the prize structure remained unchanged.

By the end of 1959, the lottery ticket had three signatures. In addition to the Minister of the Presidential Palace, the Director General of the Treasury, there was also the Minister of NationalEducation . By 1961, there were only two signatures left, those of the Minister of Finance and the Director General of the Treasury.

In 1967, the denomination of the lottery ticket was raised to 20 dong and the winning prizes also changed: 200 dong, 1,000 dong, 2,000 dong, 10,000 dong, 20,000 dong, 100,000 dong, 200,000 dong and the jackpot of 2 million dong.

In early 1970, perhaps due to inflation, the face value of the lottery ticket was raised to 30 dong and the prize structure was also raised with the jackpot worth 3 million dong. By the end of 1970, the face value of the lottery ticket continued to be raised to 40 dong and the jackpot prize also increased to 4 million dong.

From August 1, 1972, the denomination of lottery tickets was raised to 50 VND with prizes of: 500 VND, 2,500 VND, 5,000 VND, 25,000 VND, 50,000 VND, 250,000 VND, 500,000 VND and a jackpot worth 5 million VND. This was also the last change because April 26, 1975 was the last lottery, ending the national lottery program.

However, after that time, there were still lottery tickets that were accidentally printed and not drawn yet, such as the lottery ticket dated May 3, 1975. We even saw a lottery ticket that was accidentally printed and scheduled to be drawn in July 1975. This is actually not surprising, because people in the industry said that lottery tickets are usually printed in advance.

Before that, in the 1930s, there was also a type of lottery ticket sponsored by the French Indochina Lottery, called Loterie Indochinoise, issued throughout Indochina, with a face value of 1 Indochinese dollar, from 1935 to 1944.

In addition, there is another special type of lottery ticket, called Tombola lottery ticket. It is not clear when this type of lottery ticket first appeared, but we have a sheet printed on December 15, 1931, called Grande Tombola, issued in Saigon according to the Decree dated June 15, 1931 of the Governor of Cochinchina, signed by the Governor and the treasurer, with a face value of $0.50 Indochinese money.
