After The Atlantic first reported the news, President Donald Trump confirmed his plans in a post on Truth Social on the evening of February 7: "At my direction, we will make the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC great again. I have decided to immediately remove many individuals on the board, including the chairman, who do not share our vision of a golden age for arts and culture."

Mr. Trump went on to announce that he would be appointing himself as chairman of the newly formed board. “We will soon be announcing a new board of directors, with a great chairman, Donald Trump!”
Current Kennedy Center President David Rubenstein will hold the position until 2026.
Donald Trump continued to criticize the programs staged at this performing arts center, adding: "Just last year, the Kennedy Center hosted special programs aimed specifically at our youth. This will stop. The Kennedy Center is an American jewel, and should reflect the brightest stars on its stage from across our country. As for the Kennedy Center, the best is yet to come!"
Drag shows set to take place at the Kennedy Center in 2024 include Broadway Drag Brunch, Dancing Queens Drag Brunch at the venue's Roof Terrace Restaurant, A Drag Salute to Divas at the South Millennium Stage, Bertha: Grateful Drag at the Terrace Theatre, and Dixie's Tupperware Party at the Family Theatre.
It remains unclear whether Donald Trump's plan falls within his authority.
