Top export markets

In recent times, Vietnam has become an important factor in the international manufacturing supply chain, attracting foreign direct investment, thereby promoting economic growth.

Vietnam has also become an important source of manufactured goods for markets around the world , including the United States.

According to the latest data from the US Department of Commerce, by the end of May 2025, two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and the US reached 80 billion USD. Vietnam's trade surplus with the US was 64.8 billion USD, ranking 5th after China, Switzerland, Mexico and Ireland.

However, this is also a market with the most stringent technical barriers, tariffs and import regulations in the world. Deputy Director of the Trade Promotion Agency Hoang Minh Chien said that Vietnamese enterprises are currently facing major challenges from tariff policies and trade barriers of countries, especially the United States.

Proactively improve competitiveness

Experts say that to succeed in this market, Vietnamese businesses need to proactively improve their competitiveness, innovate production processes, build brands and comply with increasingly high standards.

In the context that countries, especially the United States, are increasing the application of trade defense measures, Vietnamese enterprises when targeting this market need to research and prepare carefully about consumption trends, technical regulations, rules of origin, import taxes, logistics; especially cross-border e-commerce channels...

Mr. Do Ngoc Hung, Vietnam Trade Counselor in the United States, said that the United States is still an important destination for global exporters. However, with the policy of increasing import taxes on foreign goods, the cost of importing goods into this market will be higher, directly affecting both importers and American consumers.

For Vietnamese businesses, this means that exporting to the United States will increasingly face many challenges, requiring proactive adaptation in product quality, production processes, as well as market access strategies.

According to Mr. Do Ngoc Hung, businesses need to diversify export markets through FTAs, especially new generation FTAs; stimulate domestic demand through measures to promote domestic consumption to compensate for the potential decline in exports.

Businesses also enhance domestic competitiveness, thereby strengthening exports, by investing in enhancing the overall competitiveness of key supporting and foundational industries, upgrading technology, encouraging innovation, simplifying business regulations, and improving infrastructure to reduce production costs and improve product quality.

“Enterprises need to enhance resilience and diversify supply chains, reduce dependence on raw materials and intermediate goods concentrated in one market, and promote exports with domestic intellectual content and added value to contribute to improving the economy's resilience to external shocks,” Mr. Hung emphasized.

Notably, the solutions to bring Vietnamese goods to Amazon - the world's largest cross-border e-commerce channel - and access the logistics and sales system of Wayfair, the leading furniture retail platform in the US.

To cope with the new tariff challenge from the United States, experts recommend that businesses need to boost production and marketing of essential products and consumer goods.

In addition, focus on niche or specific market segments, such as organic certified products that can be sold at higher prices that consumers are willing to pay. In particular, actively participate in specialized trade fairs and conferences in the United States to promote exports to this potential market.

At the seminar on Trade Promotion to the US market organized by the Trade Promotion Agency ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) in coordination with the Import-Export Department, the Department of Foreign Market Development and the Vietnam Trade Office in the US on July 16, Mr. Do Ngoc Hung - Vietnam Trade Counselor in the US said that the US is one of Vietnam's leading export markets.

In order to support businesses in effectively exploiting the US market, the Trade Promotion Agency, the Vietnam Trade Promotion Office in New York has coordinated with units such as the Department of Foreign Market Development, the Import-Export Department, the Vietnam Trade Office in the US, USABC, Amazon, Wayfair... to implement a series of diverse promotion programs such as international fairs, specialized exhibitions and B2B connections in major economic centers such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
