Data – the core foundation of the modern newsroom

Data is becoming a core element in the operation of modern newsrooms. From data management models, privacy protection, to content personalization to retain loyal readers, newspapers are facing many challenges in terms of technology, costs and operational thinking. These are the main contents discussed at the Press Forum on the afternoon of June 20, held in Hanoi.

Speaking at the forum “Data is the root of modern newsrooms”, Ms. Nguyen Thu Huong, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Vnexpress Online Newspaper, said that the newsroom currently uses three main data systems: article data (VA), reader data (ADP) and advertising data (SIS). According to her, data is not a “magic wand”, but a foundation that needs to be exploited persistently, continuously practiced, adjusted and perfected.

One of the prominent applications of data is content personalization: from displaying news based on interests, suggesting articles, to sending notifications to each user. However, this process is not simple, because it faces many challenges in technology and implementation costs, while efficiency is often only achieved at a limited scale.

At the seminar "Personalizing content to keep readers loyal", journalist Le Xuan Trung, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper, said: to transform anonymous readers into loyal readers, press agencies need to proactively survey, classify readers, build databases and divide groups according to the level of interaction to have appropriate care strategies.

From the perspective of journalism training, Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong emphasized the need to innovate from content to teaching methods, integrate theory with practice, promote technology application, and strengthen cooperation between schools and journalism units. This helps train journalists capable of adapting and competing in the digital age.

Also at the forum, opinions agreed that the effective implementation of data in press activities must be associated with the policy of streamlining the apparatus in the spirit of Resolution 18-NQ/TW of the 13th Party Central Committee. The Resolution not only clearly defines the strategic role of the press industry, but also orients the building of an elite, professional press team to meet the requirements of the new era.
